After School Art Students Enjoy Artist’s Visit

November 11, 2010

McKinley Middle School students in our after school art program were quite interested in Karl Hofmann’s art.  Karl visited the program this week, bringing many of his original works on paper. He told the students about earning his bachelor of fine art degree from the University of Michigan, then his masters at UNM.  After looking at and discussing the art, Karl led the students in a self-portrait collage project with the help of art teachers Santos Salinas-Contreras and Rachel Zollinger.  Karl teaches at UNM and has exhibited his artwork at galleries in Albuquerque and New Orleans.

Navajo Weaver Nanabah Aragon

November 11, 2010

Art in the School parent and grandparent volunteers had the pleasure of meeting master Navajo weaver Nanabah Aragon in October.  Nanabah shared her life story with us, telling about being sent off to the government school at a young age.  She recounted how her mother had taught her how to weave and how she continues the tradition to this day.  A fascinating life story from one who has been declared a “Living Treasure” by the State of Arizona.

The Beauty of Pueblo Pottery

September 21, 2010

Volunteers enjoyed a wonderful talk and pottery making demonstration by Laguna Pueblo potter Michael Kanteena.  He’s shown here with his deer vase, a style for which he’s best known.  Michael incorporates animal images into his pottery.  His unique contemporary style reflects motifs from the Chacoan and Mimbres cultures.   After his talk, art educator Bethe Sailer taught volunteers how to instruct children to make a pinch pot and coil pot.  And a good time was had by all!
